LightTools-6.3 license

Optical Research Associates (ORA) has released LightTools 6.3, an updated version of the illumination design and analysis software, which delivers an expanded, more powerful tool set for optical system modelling and optimisation. The software features an alternate optimisation engine, which supplements the existing optimiser and enables users to successfully address a broader range of design problems. In addition, LightTools 6.3 permits optimisation with user-defined variables, merit functions and constraints, utilising either of the optimisation engines, to further expand the classes of systems for which the software can converge on an efficient solution.

LightTools 6.3 also adds functionality for LED modelling and simulation. An expanded LED library has been incorporated that contains mechanical models for hundreds of LEDs from all major manufacturers, including apodisation files that allow accurate far-field modelling of source output, as well as ray data files for both near-field and far-field output. Furthermore, LightTools ray data files now include colour information to model the spatial and angular output characteristics of the source as a function of colour.

Another significant feature of the software is an enhanced thin film modelling utility. This allows the user to enter a thin film coating and then simulate the performance of that coating on any substrate and under any conditions of use. Other new features include an IES file format import utility that reads and converts IES formatted angular intensity data files into LightTools angular apodisation files, and the ability to perform colorimetric analyses of spatial and angular luminance calculations.

Vero visit v17

Vero visi 17 Software Plc is a company that creates and distributes CAD / CAM / CAE software for aiding the design and manufacturing process in specific sectors of the industry with a knowledge driven focus on Mould & Die. The specific sectors include the design and manufacture of plastic injection moulds, sheet metal stamping dies, progressive dies, shoe moulds, electrode production, multi-axis laser cutting, Wire EDM and others. These widespread product types are in turn to be found in a multitude of manufacturing industry sectors such as automotive, electronic, medical, white goods and aerospace.

Vero visi 17 Software has offices in Italy, England, Japan, France, Canada, USA and China. The company now has a user base that numbers more than 20,000 and supplies products to more than 40 countries through its wholly owned subsidiaries and competence centres.
5 axis machining has traditionally been regarded as advanced technology best suited to the aerospace and automotive industry. 5 axis machining offers many advantages, all of which are now being applied to the mould and die sector. VISI Machining provides the operator with a productive solution for creating highly efficient toolpaths with advanced collision control for the most complex 3D data.

Features at a glance:

* Extensive CAD interfaces
* 3D to 5 axis toolpath conversion
* Continuous 5 axis roughing / finishing
* 3 + 2 positional machining
* Multiple tool tilting options
* Full gouge protection
* Optimised toolpath movement
* Kinematic simulation
* Customisable postprocessors
* HTML & XLS report output
Extensive range of CAD interfaces. VISI can work directly with Parasolid, IGES, CATIA v4 & v5, Pro-E, UG, STEP, Solid Works, Solid Edge, ACIS, DXF, DWG, STL and VDA files. The extensive range of translators ensures that users can work with data from almost any supplier. For complex 5 axis programming it is often necessary to tweak the geometry so companies working with complex designs will benefit from the simplicity with which their customer's CAD data can be manipulated.

Deep cavity / core machining. Many complex moulds contain deep cavity areas and small radii which need to be machined with small diameter tools. Generally this would involve the use of tool extensions or longer tools which would increase the risk of deflection and provide a poor surface finish. By approaching this from a different angle, the head can be lowered and the collision detection will automatically tilt the tool and holder away from the work piece. The major advantage of this strategy is the use of shorter tools which will increase tool rigidity, reducing vibration and deflection. As a result, a constant chip load and higher cutting speed can be achieved which will ultimately increase tool life and produce a high quality surface finish. In more shallow areas, larger bull nose cutters can be used with a small lag angle. The major advantage of this approach is a lower number of toolpath passes which also reduces machining time and improves surface finish.

3D > 5 axis conversion. All 3D toolpaths can be converted to 5 axis operations which dramatically increases the number of strategies available to cover any scenario. Using this approach will apply high speed machining technology to 5 axis toolpaths. The 3D > 5 axis conversion provides intelligent collision detection and will automatically tilt away from the piece only when required. This type of semi-automatic toolpath will dramatically speed up programming and shorten the learning curve.

Delcam powermill v10

delcam powermill v10
PowerMILL CAM system at the EASTEC exhibition to be held from 19th to 21st May in Springfield Massachusetts. This new release, version 10, offers the fastest-ever toolpath generation on multi-processor computers, giving greatly increased user productivity. It incorporates the latest background-processing and multi-threading technologies and so uses the full power of recent hardware developments to reduce calculation times and increase output dramatically.

PowerMILL 10 will offer even faster calculation times for large, complex parts

Other enhancements to further increase productivity include reduced memory usage when programming the largest and most complex parts, and improved ordering to give faster cycle times on the machine tool.

With PowerMILL 10, users can prepare data in the foreground while calculating toolpaths in the background. This eliminates the need for the user to wait for each calculation to be completed before he can start preparing the next operation. While this approach can be used with single core equipment, there may be a slowing of the calculation times. The benefits are much greater with computers having two or more cores as there will be no degradation of the processing speed.

Calculations can be queued by the operator and the software will automatically start the next operation as soon as each toolpath is generated. For example, it is no longer necessary to wait for a complete roughing path to be produced before work starts on programming the rest-roughing operation. Similarly, the user can be setting the parameters needed to machine one area of a part, while toolpaths are being calculated in the background for a second area with a different strategy.

The new multi-threading capabilities allow calculations to be divided between the cores in a multi-core machine. This improves calculation times significantly so increasing user productivity, reducing any down-time where machine tools are waiting for NC data and minimizing lead times.

The extent of the savings will depend on the size and complexity of the part being machined and on the programming strategies being used. Tests at Delcam indicate that a dual core computer will perform raster machining calculations in around 55% of the time taken by a single core machine. A quad core machine will complete the calculation in around 35% of the time and an eight core machine in around 25% of the time.
